Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been laying low ever since the birth of their child early in May. With Father’s day just recently passed and the upcoming baptism of Baby Archie, fans have again taken a gander at the baby and revisited the recent birth of the boy. Interestingly, something a lot of fans have noticed about the child’s birth is not even about Master Archie himself but the occupation listed for Meghan on the baby’s birth certificate.

Rebecca English of the Daily Mail posted a picture of the little master’s birth certificate on her Twitter account, causing a bit of an outburst from fans who had drunk every detail of the document. The document had listed Meghan’s title as “Rachel Meghan Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex,” which had been expected.

What surprised fans, though, was her occupation, which the document describes as “Princess of the United Kingdom.” “Meghan is listed as a Princess of the United Kingdom — just like Kate,” posts English on Twitter.

English hits it right on the spot. However, this is not the first time this has happened, so there’s no reason to freak out. After the birth of Prince Louis, fans also noticed that Kate has the same occupation in Prince Louis’ birth certificate. This, however, does not mean that the two may be called princesses per se.

Royal protocol dictates that one must either be born the daughter of the sovereign or a prince. One may also become a prince’s wife and therefore take his title upon marriage. However, this won’t make her a “true” princess. In the case of Meghan and Kate, they will hold a title that is derived from their husbands — as a princess must be born into it, not taken by marriage. As such, their royal titles are “duchess,” not “princess.”

This does not mean, however, that the title of princess will not be attainable. For Kate at least, she will be given the title of princess when Prince Charles ascends the throne. Prince William will likely take on the mantle of Prince of Wales, naming his wife, Kate, as the Princess of Wales. As Prince Harry is sixth in line to the throne, it is likely that Meghan will remain a duchess for quite some time.
