A Look Into Lionel Messi’s Career By The Numbers AFP

Lionel Messi surpassed his long-time football rival Cristiano Ronaldo with his record-breaking Instagram post following the World Cup final in December 2022. Now, the Argentine star has discussed about it.

Ronaldo previously boasted the accolade of sportsperson with the most-liked Instagram post ever. But then Messi took over when his post garnered over 57 million likes just in a few days.

According to infobae, Messi shared why he believes he took the social media record. The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner said that he didn't look for it because he "wasn't looking to be the most liked photo, far from it. But hey, there it is." He shared that it showed a little bit of what people wanted to see him with the World cup. He thought that the photo reached people, and the truth was that very few comments he could read. He had a "million messages and it ended up blocking me. It was crazy.”

Even though he won the Copa América in Brazil with the Argentine team, Messi from Rosario was missing something. Finally, in his fifth attempt, he was able to get his hands on the World Cup trophy and since Dec. 18, 2022, his life has changed forever. He thought that he and his team gave the Argentine people an "unforgettable month." He said that "will be indelible, people went out to celebrate after each game, they didn't care about anything and they waited for the National Team match." According to him, it was a month, and not just the final and lifting the World Cup trophy.

But there were doubts whether the cup that he raised was an original or not. Messi said that he didn't know why "there was a mess with the Cup." He raised the good one and "later in the celebrations there was half a mess." He and his team didn't know if they had "the real one or not."

As for the Messi vs Ronaldo rivalry, it has gone on for years. Their fans across the world have been expressing reasons why one is better than the other. But as Ronaldo became a free agent during the World Cup and exited in the quarter-finals, Messi went all the way and lifted the trophy. Ronaldo, who is now with Al-Nassr, has always been positioned as the stronger celebrity of the two, according to GOAL. He smashed records after he posted a picture of himself with Messi for a collaboration with Louis Vuitton. But since then he has had to watch the Argentine steal away another one of his records.

Messi now has the opportunity to poach Ronaldo's Champions League scoring record. The Paris Saint-Germain player is returning to European action in a few weeks time in a clash against Bayern Munich. As for Ronaldo, he will be unable to answer back with Champions League goals of his own as he is tied up with a Saudi Arabian club.
