Miley Cyrus has completely transformed from her sweet character in “Hannah Montana” into the controversy-provoking singing powerhouse that she is today. Sure some people hated the video of her song “Wrecking Ball,” which was deemed too provocative. But she’s the type who’ll never let other people’s opinion rain down on her parade.

In fact, she loves pissing people off. And it’s probably one of the reasons why she’s very keen to play Ashely O in the Netflix series “Black Mirror.”

“Black Mirror” writers Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones initially thought that it might be difficult to convince Cyrus, who had very few acting engagements after her “Hannah Montana” days, to star in one episode in the show. But contrary to their expectations, the singer was very eager to play the role.

“She read the script and, as you can imagine, there were quite a few things in the script that she could identify with,” Jones said at a press screening of the episode. “She’s got a very sarcastic sense of humour — she’s very acerbic and very funny. And she delights in subverting things.”

In the end, Cyrus found the project much to her liking. “So, she’s been on that journey and she said, ‘We’re going to have a lot of fun with this,’” Jones added.

The idea that the role might offend some people is an added bonus for Cyrus as well. “I think she said, ‘Oh it will piss people off and pissing people off is kind of my thing,’” added Brooker.

But the more compelling reason why she agreed to do an episode of “Black Mirror” is that she felt a connection to the character she was set to play. “It’s not even if I’m interested or not,” Cyrus told Elle in an interview. “It’s just that no one else can play this because this is my life. Like, you just took my life.”

Cyrus even feels that they molded the character from her own life but with a few twists. “The character is me,” the singer added. “They twisted it up the way they always do, but the industry is already pretty dark. And at times, I’ve definitely felt like Ashley O. I still do. Making this record, I felt like Ashley O at times.”
