A monster truck hits crowd during a demonstration at the "Extremo Aeroshow" in Chihuahua, Mexico, on Saturday. The devastating accident has killed at least eight when the monster truck lost control and careened into the crowd of 4,000 spectators after it had jumped over two cars.

According to Mexican news outlet El Universal, the number of victims killed had risen to 13. However, other media outlets can only confirm the death of at least eight. The LA Times reports that more than 70 were injured, eight of whom in critical, in the incident.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this point but investigators are looking into mechanical failure. “So far, the inspection indicates there was a mechanical failure, but we are investigating everything,” said state attorney general's office representative Carlos Gonzalez.

According to Gonzalez, the driver responsible of the monster truck that hit the crowd has been detained on negligent homicide charges. BBC News reported that the driver tested positive for alcohol.

The amateur video on YouTube shows the monster truck hits crowd in an outdoor arena that was not equipped with sufficient safety precautions. The truck launched itself over a heap of cars and lost control when it landed. Spectators watching the monster truck demonstration were standing only a couple feet away and were not protected by a barrier. People fled in panic as the monster truck crushed a number of victims in an instant.

“This terrible tragedy … has left all of us deeply troubled,” Chihuahua Governor Javier Duarte said. The show, which was supposed to conclude Sunday, was promptly canceled after the accident.
