A mother allegedly murdered her 19-year-old son as she was upset over his decision of becoming a transwoman.

The suspect, 45-year-old Umadevi, a resident of Ammapalayam in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu was arrested along with five other accomplices for the alleged murder of Naveen Kumar, who had changed his name to Akshita after identifying himself as a transwoman, authorities said.

According to the police, Kumar had come to terms with his gender identity and had initiated efforts to become a transwoman.

He had changed his name to Akshita and had been living with a transgender community in Bengaluru, a city in the state of Karnataka, the India Today reported.

Last month, Akshita visited her mother, who was reportedly not pleased with her son’s new appearance.

“She pressured him to take hormone injections to remain a male,” police said. However, Akshita refused to do so. This gave way to a heated argument between the duo and eventually escalated to the murder, according to the police.

“When Naveen did not oblige, Umadevi assaulted him with friends resulting in his death,” police said.

Neighbors rushed Akshita to a government hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Following the death, Umadevi and her accomplices were arrested by the police. Those arrested were identified as Venkadesh, Kamaraj, Karthikeyan, Santhosh, and Sivakumar. Police said a further investigation is underway.

This is an ongoing investigation and no other details were revealed at the time of this writing.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a seemingly homophobic and transphobic Pennsylvania mother murdered her own two children, who were members of the LGBTQ+ community.

On Sep. 23, Krisinda Ann Bright, a 48-year-old woman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, pleaded not guilty to the murder of 16-year-old Jeffrey “JJ” Bright and 22-year-old Jasmine Cannady that happened at their home on Feb. 23.

Bright reportedly shot Cannady dead while she was lying on her bed. She then went downstairs to murder Jeffrey but the gun jammed initially.

Jeffrey, a young transgender boy, begged for his mother to not shoot him. But his cries were unheard as the mother opened fire at him after she managed to fix her gun.

The shot did not kill him, so the mother proceeded to head upstairs once again to retrieve another weapon. She then shot Jeffrey dead, before calling the police and confessing to the murder of her two children.

Despite having reason to believe that her mental health was a factor in her heinous crimes, the prosecutors had sought the death penalty against her.

On Dec.15, Bright pleaded guilty to double homicide charges after making a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death sentence. She was sentenced to spend life in prison for murdering her children.
