A mother and her boyfriend have been jailed for allegedly killing the woman's three-year-old daughter after the young girl’s cries interrupted them while having sex.
On Aug. 9 last year, three-year-old toddler Kaylee-Jayde Priest was found dead at the flat where she lived with her mother, Nicola Priest, 23. The child was allegedly thrashed and died from serious chest and abdominal injuries that the experts compared to wounds of a child hit by a car at 40 mph, or of a child that fell from three floors onto a concrete floor.
Nicola and her then-boyfriend Callum Redfern, 22, who had previous convictions for driving and cannabis possession, have since been convicted of manslaughter and jailed by Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, Aug. 6. The court has slapped the Priest mother with 15 years behind bars and her boyfriend Redfern with a 14-year sentence, the Birmingham Mail reported.
The young Priest, who was described in court as a "lively and happy child," reportedly died from serious chest and abdominal injuries including broken ribs, lower leg fractures, and a broken sternum inflicted at Nicola's flat in Solihull.
The toddler victim was reportedly put to bed around 7 p.m., while the couple went to have sex in Nicola's bedroom. However, the child did not want to go to bed and wanted to stay up and play. There is no direct evidence as to what happened next, but it is known that the minor Priest subsequently vomited repeatedly and later died due to her injuries overnight, WalesOnline reported.
“The vomiting was the result of the severe beating you were both responsible for inflicting on her," Justice Andrew David Foxton told the couple in court.
“No doubt irritated by Priest crying, asking to be let out, it interrupted the two of you when you wanted to have sex," he added.
The judge said that the child's life could have been saved if one of the suspects had called medical assistance at the right time.
When Redfern was reportedly asked about how Priest's death had affected him, he replied saying: “It’s not my child… it’s not really affected me.”
Jurors also heard that Nicola used to allegedly hit the toddler Priest around the head and referred to her as a “******* brat.”
On July 24, 2020, days before Priest's death, Nicola reportedly texted Redfern saying “I’m gonna kill her… because she keeps leaving the living room or going in the kitchen, so I’ve paled (hit) her one and smacked her for shitting in her nappy,” according to LatestLY.
Nicola and Redfern must both serve two-thirds of their jail terms before they can be considered for early release.
