A mother and son tragically died after the two-wheeler they were traveling in hit a pothole and threw them under a speeding vehicle.

The incident happened in the pothole-ridden road at Bhiwandi in the Thane district of Maharashtra, India on Thursday, Sept.17 afternoon, police said.

The deceased were identified as 48-year-old Devikabai Balaram Kakade and her 26-year-old son, Nitin.

"They were returning home to Ambepada on a two-wheeler after having darshan of the Lord Ganesh idol installed at the house of the woman's daughter in nearby Purna village. When they reached Mankoli junction, their two-wheeler skidded off the road after hitting a pothole and both of them fell down. They came under a speeding vehicle that was coming from behind," a Times of India report quoted a police official as saying.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were later pronounced dead. Their bodies were sent to a medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, police said.

A case has been registered against the unidentified driver of the vehicle under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act at the Narpoli police station, police said adding that a further investigation is underway.

In another incident, a 27-year-old man and his minor son were killed in a road accident Thursday, in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India, when a speeding truck hit their two-wheeler from behind.

Authorities said the accident took place when the man, identified as Chotte Singh along with his wife and son were on their way to a relative's home.

"A speeding truck was behind the motorcycle. The biker was trying to slow down as there was a big pit on the road. Suddenly, a dog came in front of the vehicle and it was run over by the truck," said a local from Lather Deva village, where the incident took place.

The Jhabreda police station in-charge, Ravindra Kumar, said: "We admitted the victim's wife to Civil Hospital, Roorkee, immediately after the accident. She has sustained multiple injuries but is said to be safe now."
