President Donald Trump said that "guys like me" helped build the United States and described unnamed critics as "ingrates" during an event focused on commercial fishing policy.
The remarks came as Trump signed a proclamation reopening a large area of the Pacific Ocean to commercial fishing, reversing restrictions that had been imposed in parts of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument.
Speaking before fishermen and industry representatives, Trump praised workers in sectors such as fishing and agriculture before turning to criticism of people he said complain about the country.
"These people built the country, not the complainers. The complainers didn't build the country," Trump said. "Whether it's fishermen or farmers or anything else. Me. Guys like me, they built the country."
He continued: "And you know, I watch all these ingrates, they're always complaining, complaining. They didn't build anything, they couldn't build anything."
Trump did not specify whom he was referring to as "complainers" or "ingrates," although he did later mention Somalians and Minnesota.
Trump may as well have called the rest of us peasants.

According to him, it wasn’t workers who built America. It was rich guys like him and his cabinet:

The comments came during a White House event centered on a proclamation allowing commercial fishing in nearly 500,000 square miles of waters in the central Pacific. Administration officials said the move would expand access for the U.S. fishing industry and support domestic seafood production.
The proclamation reverses protections established during previous administrations that limited commercial fishing activity within the monument's boundaries. Environmental groups have criticized the change, arguing it could affect marine ecosystems and protected species. Fishing industry advocates have welcomed the decision, saying it will provide additional opportunities for American fishermen.
Trump's remarks quickly circulated online, with video clips shared by supporters and critics alike.
The president has frequently used public appearances to highlight workers in industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, energy and commercial fishing, often portraying them as central to the country's economic success.
Thursday's event was one of several recent administration initiatives focused on domestic resource production and industry. White House officials have argued that expanding access to fishing grounds, energy resources and other economic activities will strengthen U.S. competitiveness and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
The White House did not immediately provide additional clarification regarding Trump's reference to "complainers" and "ingrates."
The proclamation takes effect immediately, according to administration officials.
