A woman in Peru rose from the dead as she was being laid to rest at her funeral on April 26. Rosa Isabell Cespedes Callaca shocked her family and friends when they heard knocking inside her coffin during her funeral service in the city of Lambayeque.

According to the Mirror, pallbearers and mourners at her funeral were left stunned as they heard banging noises from her coffin that was hoisted on their shoulders at the beginning of the service. Her relatives lowered her coffin and opened the lid to find their supposed dead relative alive and staring back at them.

The cemetery caretaker, Juan Segundo Cajo, immediately called the police after witnessing the unsettling incident. "[She] opened her eyes and was sweating. I immediately went to my office and called the police." He said the woman was taken to the Referential Hospital Ferrenafe still contained in her coffin.

Medics rushed to hook up Callaca on a life-support machine as she continued to show weak signs of life. The woman, however, died a few hours later. Frantic relatives were left dumbfounded at the strange occurrence and wanted to get a proper medical explanation. The woman’s aunt spoke to reporters and told them they have video evidence of Callaca pushing and touching her coffin. "We want to know why my niece reacted yesterday when we were taking her to be buried.”

Police have launched a probe into the incident, leading them to the Lambayeque Regional Hospital, where she was initially treated following a fatal crash that took the life of her brother-in-law and severely injured three of her nephews.

Callaca was declared a fatal casualty in the tragic accident however, her relatives believe she may have been in a coma leading doctors to diagnose her as a fatality. She was loaded into a coffin ahead of her funeral only to have her wake up before getting buried.

Her family is outraged at the clear negligence of the hospital where the doctors failed to diagnose her properly and declared her dead. The woman’s relatives are even more devastated having to say their farewells twice and are keen on getting answers. Meanwhile, Callaca’s nephews who were injured in the same crash are said to be in serious condition but slowly recovering.
