Colombian artist Shakira will be given the Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards next month.

She will become the first South American artist to receive this award named after Michael Jackson. Previously, Jennifer López became the first Latina to get this recognition. Shakira will perform during the Video Music Awards on September 12 in Newark, New Jersey.

This year, Shakira also got four nominations, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration (with fellow Colombian Karol G), and two more in the Best Latin Video.

According to Bruce Gillmer, Chief Content Officer at Paramount+, "Shakira is a true global force,"

Gillmer, also president of music and events at MTV's parent company, said in a press release that Shakira has a "massive impact across the musical landscape", and that the Colombian will continue "to create and entertain at the highest level."

Besides López, previous recipients of the Vanguard Award include Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna and Missy Elliot, among others.

The award was first given in 1984 to David Bowie, The Beatles and director Richard Lester.

According to Forbes, Shakira's net worth is around $400 million after selling almost 80 million records globally.
