Latino artist Ricky Martin set the MTV Video Music Awards stage ablaze as he made history by becoming the first receiver of the Latin Icon Award. The Puerto Rican superstar, whose groundbreaking career paved the way for the global Latin music explosion, accepted the honor from none other than Colombian hitmaker J Balvin.

Balvin, visibly emotional, paid tribute to Martin's trailblazing legacy before handing him the award. "Ricky Martin built the Latin music takeover from the ground up," Balvin said. "He inspired me and so many Latinos like me. If it wasn't for Ricky Martin, I wouldn't be here speaking in Spanish. Te queremos mucho, eres grande, eres mi hermano."

The heartfelt moment sent the audience into roaring applause. Balvin closed his remarks, calling Ricky "the icon, the legend and one of my favorite artists in the world."

A Career that Changed the Global Soundtrack

Martin, now celebrating more than four decades in music, took fans on a journey through his unforgettable hits. From Living La Vida Loca to María and Vente Pa' Ca, his medley reminded viewers why he remains one of the most electrifying performers in the industry.

Ricky's Words to the World

After his performance, Jessica Simpson described as a "full circle moment" the opportunity of giving him the award, as he, "the biggest pop artist in the world in 1999," invited her to open for him in the United States.

"How hot is Ricky Martin?" Simpson asked, and became the question of the night on social media, as fans reacted to his flawless vocals and energetic choreography.

Accepting the award, Martin dedicated the recognition to his children and to the millions of fans who have followed his career. "This is for you all. I am addicted to your applause," he said.

"It's not only you in America but all over the world," Martin added. "It's been 40 years of uniting countries, breaking boundaries, and keeping music alive. I dedicate this to my kids, and to everyone who believes in the power of music to bring us together."

The Latin Icon Award solidified Martin's role not just as a hitmaker, but as a cultural architect who transformed the global music landscape. From his boy-band beginnings with Menudo, to igniting the late-1990s Latin pop boom, to becoming an enduring voice for LGBTQ+ visibility, Martin's impact continues to inspire generations.
