A woman police officer in Mumbai filed a First Information Report last Friday against a man who allegedly raped her under the pretext of marriage. On Sunday, the female officer also named two other persons who have threatened and blackmailed her in connection with the alleged rape.

The victim, who is an Assistant Police inspector (API) filed the FIR with the Powai police after she got fed up with the harassment from the accused and his two colleagues. The three men had been blackmailing her as well as threatening to release videos of her on social media. According to NDTV, a case of rape and cheating has been registered against the suspects which come under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused claims to be a banking professional and hails from Aurangabad. The woman met him through a social networking site and both eventually got into a relationship. During the course of their relationship, the accused had allegedly recorded videos of the couple’s intimate moments and began his quest of harassing and blackmailing the woman officer.

No arrests have been made at this time of writing as further investigations are ongoing.

In another rape incident, the wife of a sub-inspector (SI) has come to the defense of her husband after he was implicated in rape charges. The Salem Tabri police booked SI Jagjit Singh and his two accomplices on June 8 for allegedly raping a 39-year-old national level power and weight lifter while promising her a job in the police department.

The Ludhiana’s cop’s wife filed a complaint with the members of the Ludhiana grievances committee after her husband was being blackmailed by the victim. According to the cop’s wife, Shivit Kaur, the victim said she had first met her husband when he was drunk. But contrary to the victim’s claims, Kaur said her husband does not drink alcohol.

Based on the victim’s complaint, she was sexually assaulted by Singh. “Moreover, the victim alleged that she was overpowered. But she is a national-level powerlifter. It won’t be easy for anyone to overpower her.”

Kaur said the complainant started blackmailing her husband for money and demanding Rs 35 lakh ($3.5 million). When he refused, the woman filed a rape case against him. Singh’s wife raised questions with the committee as to why the complaint was only registered after nine months from the incident.

Simmi Chopra Pashan, member of the Ludhiana Grievance committee, said she will request Police Commissioner Rakesh Agrawal for a re-investigation in the case.
