The Martinsville 500 is looking like a showdown between Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson as Hamlin broke Johnson's track record to grab pole for the Sunday race. Hamlin's 19.013 second lap registered as quick as 99.595 mph while Jimmie Johnson was behind by 0.048 seconds and a speed of 99.344 mph.

19.013 seconds (99.595 mph). Hamlin, who has four Martinsville victories, will start beside second-place qualifier Jimmie Johnson (99.344 mph. Meanwhile, Kyle Busch start third, followed by Johnson's closest rival for the points lead, Matt Kenseth.

"I think we need to perform on the racetrack, and they'll notice us (in Saturday's truck race), and they'll notice us Sunday," said Denny Hamlin, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver. Hamlin aims to win at Martinsville to avoid a winless season. "I don't feel any kind of entitlement to being a favorite, especially how we've run these last six months or so has been very tough. We've definitely been sort of a nonfactor as far as race wins are concerned."

Unfortunately, this season has been difficult for Hamlin as he suffered a broken back from a tough crash at the Auto Club Speedway in March. Denny Hamlin is currently 24th in the driver's point standings but the No. 11 FedEx Toyota driver is determined.

"For the competition or anyone to think the (team) is going to be a favorite going into a track where we've struggled to run top 10 lately would be farfetched," Hamlin said. "However, I'm pretty sure and pretty confident that we're going to be a pretty larger force on Sunday."

"If we get a win, by no means will it fix or make us feel good about our year, but it will give us something to smile about in the future," said Hamlin, who was feeling confident enough to tell reporters "See you Sunday night" after his pole-winning news conference.
