Former US President Donald Trump allegedly said some kind words about Adolf Hitler to his then-chief of staff John Kelly.

“Well, Hitler did a lot of good things," Trump allegedly said during a 2018 European trip to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, Michael Bender wrote in his book "Frankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost," reported The Guardian. The bombshell book by the Wall Street Journal White House Correspondent will hit the stands on July 13.

According to Bender, Trump made the comment during an impromptu history lesson in which Kelly “reminded the president which countries were on which side during the conflict” and “connected the dots from the first world war to the second world war and all of Hitler’s atrocities."

However, a Trump spokesperson, Liz Harrington, said in a statement, “This is totally false. President Trump never said this. It is made-up fake news, probably by a general who was incompetent and was fired.”

But Bender said that sources reported that Kelly “told the president that he was wrong, but Trump was undeterred,” emphasizing German economic recovery under Hitler during the 1930s.

"Kelly pushed back again, and argued that the German people would have been better off poor than subjected to the Nazi genocide,” Bender wrote.

Kelly reportedly told Trump that even if his claim about the German economy under the Nazis were true, “you cannot ever say anything supportive of Adolf Hitler. You just can’t.”

Bender wrote that Kelly did his best to overcome Trump’s “stunning disregard for history."

“Senior officials described his understanding of slavery, Jim Crow, or the Black experience in general post-civil war as vague to non-existent. But Trump’s indifference to Black history was similar to his disregard for the history of any race, religion or creed," he wrote.

Kelly, who left the White House in early 2019, has often spoken critically of Trump. He reportedly told friends that the president he served then was “the most flawed person I have ever met in my life."

The book also highlighted Trump's violent language during meetings after protests in Seattle and Portland, Oregon, began to garner attention. During his time as the US President, Trump would talk about videos that showed law enforcement getting physical with protesters, reported CNN. "That's how you're supposed to handle these people. Crack their skulls!" Trump told his top law enforcement and military officials, according to Bender.
