The family of 25-year-old Kevin Mares from Queens, New York, is facing an unthinkable loss. What was supposed to be a weekend of music and celebration in Puerto Rico turned into a tragedy that has shaken two communities.
Kevin had traveled with his girlfriend and friends to attend a Bad Bunny concert in San Juan. In the early hours of Sunday morning, he was walking in the coastal neighborhood of La Perla when violence erupted nearby.
His mother, Sandra Mares, told CBS News how she lost her son when allegedly a group of people began arguing across the street. Suddenly, someone pulled out a gun and fired into the crowd. One of the bullets struck Kevin in the abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors could not save him.
Sandra says her son was "in the wrong place at the wrong time" and that everything happened in seconds. "It feels like a piece of us has been ripped away," she said.
According to the GoFundMe opened by the family, Kevin was a veterinary technician studying to become a licensed veterinarian. He loved animals, worked long hours caring for pets, and had a passion for helping others. This fall, he planned to propose to his girlfriend of six years. He dreamed of opening his own veterinary clinic one day.
His family describes him as a loving son, a loyal friend, and a young man with an adventurous spirit. "He was always creating memories with the people he loved most. Family was at the center of everything he did," they shared.
Now, they face the painful task of bringing Kevin's body back to New York. The costs include transportation from Puerto Rico and funeral services at Frederick Funeral Home. To cover the expenses, the family has launched a fundraising campaign.
"Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference," the family said. "Thank you for helping us bring him home and honor his memory."
According the AP, the case remains under investigation. No arrests have been made, and police have not identified any suspects. Authorities are reviewing security footage from the area and are asking witnesses to come forward. Two local residents were also injured in the shooting and remain hospitalized.
Kevin's death has left his loved ones in shock and grief. In both New York and Puerto Rico, people who knew him are remembering his kindness, his humor, and his plans for the future. His family says they want justice, but above all, they want to give Kevin the farewell he deserves.
