It's been 37 seasons since the New York Giants owned a dismal record of 0-6 but with a loss in their next game to the Chicago Bears, Big Blue will fall to that unwanted mark. Beginning their 2013-2014 with five-straight losses, the Giants have not been able to get any consistency on either side of the ball. Opening the year with a road loss to the division rival Dallas Cowboys, New York dropped consecutive decisions to Denver and Carolina before falling in contests to the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Heading into a Week 6 showdown with the Chicago Bears, Giants coach Tom Coughlin says there are multiple areas that need improvement, not just from the quarterback position. "The guy is trying to play the best he can," Coughlin said of Eli Manning, who has thrown 12 interceptions this season. "He's certainly trying to do too much. He knows his team and he knows his responsibility. He's an extremely accountable guy and he's going to do everything he possibly can. Sometimes it's not to be done that way."
While the Giants have endured heartache this season - much of it self-inflicted - the Chicago Bears enter the sixth week of the season at a competitive 3-2. Recording three-straight wins to start the season, the Bears have endured back-to-back losses - 40-32 to Detroit and 26-18 to New Orleans - but despite the recent struggles, quarterback Jay Cutler remains confident he and the Bears offense can help the team earn another victory. Getting back on track with All-Pro receiver Brandon Marshall will be a big part of that as well.
"I'm excited for Brandon and what the future holds for him," Cutler said regarding his rapport with Marshall. "He is frustrated. I'm frustrated. I think everyone is frustrated when you lose two games in a row like that. That being said, I've known him for a long time and know what kind of ultra-competitor that he is, and when you lose a game, any competitor will think, 'Hey, what if I'd done more and what if I had more touches? Could I have impacted the game more than I already did?' I just think he's kind of feeling that. He knows at the end of the day because he's a very smart guy that those other guys are getting catches because he is on the field."
With 10 touchdowns and a completion percentage north of 65% this season, Jay Cutler certainly hasn't been shy about airing it out, even though he has thrown 6 picks. Set to take on a banged up New York Giants defense to jumpstart Week 6, Cutler and company have to be excited about this opportunity but rest assured, the Bears won't sleep on the Giants since they know their opponents are desperate for a win.
Surprisingly, the Giants - even after a dismal start - are only 2 games behind the Philadelphia Eagles for first place in the downtrodden NFC East. With a victory, perhaps the Giants will be able to build some much-needed confidence and at least become competitive again.
We'll certainly find out soon enough.
