A New Mexico military facility and nearby schools entered a precautionary lockdown after someone thought that they heard gunfire on the base, but the the reports were unsubstantiated, officials say. The lockdown was reported just hours after a confirmed shooting in San Bernardino, California at a civilian service center for disabled people. The New Mexico lockdown affected the Kirtland Air Force Base and some Albuquerque public schools located near the base.

“At 2:30 p.m. Kirtland Air Force Base security forces received a report of an active shooter in a base building and a base-wide lockdown was initiated,” Carl Grusnick, a base spokesman, told the Albuquerque Journal. “Subsequent investigation by base security personnel could not substantiate the threat to the installation, and the lockdown was lifted at 3:15 p.m., with the installation resuming normal operations.”
