A 6-year-old North Carolina girl and her parents were shot by an enraged neighbor Tuesday night when a basketball rolled onto his yard, according to a report.

A gunman opened fire in Gaston County at around 8 p.m. after becoming furious over the bouncing ball, injuring Kinsley White, her mother Ashley Hilderbrand, and her father William White as well.

White was seriously hurt while defending his daughter.

A group of children was playing basketball when the ball landed in the yard of the alleged shooter, according to neighbors who spoke to the station.

Robert Louis Singletary, the suspected shooter, allegedly fired shots at a neighbor while running down the street in a rage, New York Post reported.

He then returned and started firing at the family, striking the small daughter who required stitches for a bullet wound to her face, according to WSOC-TV.

According to investigators, her father was also injured and was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.

Before being shot in the back, he attempted to attract gunfire toward him to protect his children.

"We don't even know the man," Kinsley told the station, adding. "Why did you shoot my daddy and me? Why did you shoot a kid's dad?"

Hilderbrand was grazed by a bullet and is recuperating at home with her kid. According to neighbors, Singletary continued firing until he ran out of bullets.

"He looked at my husband and my daughter and told them, 'I'm going to kill you,'" Hilderbrand told the station.

Singletary, 24, is still missing, according to the authorities.

According to Gaston County authorities, he has been charged with four charges of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill or seriously injure, and one count of possessing a firearm while a felon.

The police department is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the fugitive.

Police Chief Stephen Zill issued a statement saying, "I want to say to the people of Gaston County – this sort of violence will not stand."

He added that the US Marshals are not helping with the search for Singletary.
