When the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes begins on Saturday, May 18 at the famed Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, all eyes will be on the 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb.
The second leg of the Triple Crown, the 2013 Preakness, will offer tons of excitement even though the field of competing horses is at a total of nine, down from the total of 19 that finished the Kentucky Derby.
Orb and trainer Shug McGaughey will certainly be the early line favorites to win the Preakness following the horse's strong performance at the Derby, and while there may only be eight other horses coming out of the stalls Saturday, here's a look at three horses capable of competing with the Kentucky Derby champion.

3. Mylute (Early odds: 5-1)
With all the talk surrounding Orb leading up to this weekend's Preakness Stakes, Mylute and female jockey Rosie Napravnik should be considered serious threats to the Kentucky Derby champion. Falling behind early in the Derby, Napravnik and her horse were able to close strong down the final stretch, finishing in a tie for fifth. While her bid to become the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Derby came up short, expect a solid performance this weekend from Napravnik and Mylute.
2. Departing (Early odds: 6-1)
The 2013 Illinois Derby winner Departing -- led by trainer Al Stall Jr. -- should certainly be in the discussion when it comes to winning the 2013 Preakness. Stall Jr. has a past history of upsets as it was his trained horse Blame who knocked off Zenyatta for the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic. The loss by Zenyatta was the horses only defeat in 20 races. With a strong, durable and quick horse in Departing, Stall Jr. is exciting about the upcoming race.
"My wife is from Baltimore and has tons of family up there," Stall told the USA Today. "We're going to have a good time and hopefully win the race."
As one of the favorites to compete this Saturday, Departing will be a horse to follow at Pimlico.

1. Goldencents (Early odds: 8-1)
A big time favorite heading into the Kentucky Derby, 2013 Santa Anita Derby winner Goldencents struggled mightily at Churchill Downs. Not able to adapt to the wet and rainy conditions of the Derby track, Goldencents finished in the dismal 17th position, a rough finish for a horse so heavily regarded entering the competition. The experience of trainer Doug O'Neill will continue to have this horse in the hunt at every race entered though. With 4 wins in 7 races entered, Goldencents should still be considered a contender despite his struggles at the Kentucky Derby.
A total of nine horses will blast out of the starting gates this Saturday at Pimlico as the 138th edition of the Preakness Stakes promises to be an eventful race.
Feel free to let us know who some of your favorites entering the weekend are.
