Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, has been widely criticized for breaking a lot of royal traditions. What many tend to forget, however, is that there are other royals deemed to be bigger disrupters than the Duchess of Sussex.

While Meghan indeed broke a few rules, especially when it comes to her first child with Prince Harry, some people say that Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, is an even greater disrupter than the former.

“Look what happened with the Duke of Edinburgh and the ‘men with moustaches’ — he was then the new entrant, he was the one that wanted things to change, he was one that wanted to shake up things at Buckingham Palace,” noted ITV royal correspondent Chris Ship. “You could call him the disrupter of the 1950s.”

Prince Philip also has a bigger influence on the throne compared to Meghan. “The Duke of Edinburgh is married to the Queen and right at the top,” the correspondent said.

Meghan is known for breaking a few royal birth traditions, but Prince Philip also broke a birth tradition of his own. In the 1960s, men were not usually present when their wives gave birth, but the Duke of Edinburg actually broke that tradition by being present when Queen Elizabeth gave birth to their youngest child, Prince Edward, in 1964.

“There were quite a lot of men who couldn’t quite cope with the idea,” University of Leeds’ Dr. Laura King noted. “Equally a lot of women didn’t like the idea of their husbands seeing them in that way.”

Ship also believes that there’s another royal who is a bigger disrupter than Meghan Markle — Prince Harry’s mom, Princess Diana “In the same way, you could say Diana was the disrupter in the 1980s and 90s and perhaps Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, could be a disrupter now. Although, she is slightly lower down,” the correspondent said.

However, being a disruptive force is not necessarily a bad thing for the monarchy. “If you are going to introduce an element of different into the Royal Family you are always going to rub up against some opposition somewhere,” Ship added. “I think that level of disruption is actually quite good because the Royal Family does have to move.”
