With the 2014 Pro Bowl set to take place on Jan. 26 from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, the NFL is preparing to make history when they introduce a new format for selecting the two participating teams. While past games have seen the participation of players from both the AFC and NFC, this year's contest will continue to utilize players from both conferences but instead of separating them based on their ties to the American and National divisions, the 2014 Pro Bowl will not show player restriction based on conference affiliation. The event will take place over two days and feature some of the biggest names in professional football, including past greats who made their respective marks in the league's showcase game.
NFL alumni captains Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice will have the final say in their respective rosters while offensive captains Drew Brees and Jamaal Charles along with defensive captains J.J. Watt and Robert Quinn will input their thoughts into the selection of players as well. Each team will need to fill slots for 44 total players -- including 21 on offense, 18 defensive players and five special team members -- and some of the top names in professional football will be available for selection, adding a unique and first-time experience to one of the most popular All-Star games in pro sports.
Superstar figures in Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham are just a handful of players selected for the 2014 Pro Bowl draft while rising stars in Browns tight end Jordan Cameron, Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston and Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly represent a young crop of talent expected to add to the entertainment value of the game.
Members of the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks including Peyton Manning, Richard Sherman, Cam Chancellor, Marshawn Lynch and Demaryius Thomas were all selected to the Pro Bowl but will not play due to their teams competing in Super Bowl XLVIII the very next week.
Pro Bowl front office members will select players from the guard, center, fullback, interior defensive line and special teams groups during the opening night of the draft while the remaining players and positions will be filled out on the second and final day.
