Rumors are swirling around that Queen Elizabeth does not plan to abdicate because she’s afraid that Prince Charles might screw up as a monarch. The Queen has been leading the monarchy for more than seven decades now, and many wonder if she will ever abdicate in the near future due to old age. Apparently, she does not have any plans of stepping down anytime soon.

When she celebrated her 21st birthday, Queen Elizabeth made a promise to England that she would be their Queen for life. She has successfully kept that promise for decades now. However, rumors suggest that Queen Elizabeth’s refusal to abdicate is not about wanting to keep her promise to the British people but about not wanting to see the heir to the throne fail.

Compared with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles is not as popular as his mother is in the U.K. This started because of Charles’ failed marriage with Princess Diana and his illicit affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. Although his popularity rating has been able to recover a bit since the scandal, the majority of the British people still prefer Prince William to him as their next king.

While it is perceived that Prince Charles may not even be half as great as Queen Elizabeth when it comes to perhaps being a monarch, it is not true that the Queen refuses to abdicate because she does not trust her son. After all, there is no evidence that Queen Elizabeth feels that her son will screw up as king. She has brought up Prince Charles in a way that would prepare him for his future kingship, and not trusting his son would only mean wasting the decades she has spent preparing him for the role.

Moreover, abdication has never before in British history been used as a form of retirement. Queen Elizabeth may slow down on her royal duties due to her age, but she will never abdicate. And it’s not because she feels that her son will screw up.

It may not be easy for the public to revere Prince Charles as they have revered his mother for the past decades, but even if the public is in favor of putting a new monarch on the throne, Prince Charles is their next king based on the line of succession.
