Spy shots and video leaks have surfaced since winter, so it's no surprise that the Mercedes-Benz AMG division has been hard at work developing a more powerful version of its critically acclaimed Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG coupe and convertible. However, what is surprising is rather than adding a new performance trim above the standard version, the German automaker has opted to completely phase out the SLS AMG after the 2012 model year, replacing it with the new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT instead.
The numerous modifications to the 2013 SLS AMG GT are slight, but holistically significant. Powered by the same naturally aspirated hand-built 6.2 liter V8 engine, the GT receives 20-hp of extra oomph, or a total of 583-hp. What's more, its 479 lb.-ft. of torque is enough to ripple the asphalt below. Thanks to the abundance of power, the SLS AMG GT reaches from 0-to-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, a tenth quicker than the 3.7 seconds posted by the outgoing SLS AMG. Top speed remains the same at an electronically limited 197 mph. We wonder what happens to the über coupe when it hits 198 mph.
To complement the extra 20-hp, AMG revamped the transmission control unit to its advanced SPEEDSHIFT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, delivering even quicker gear shifts when the manual mode is selected by the driver.
Handling wise, the SLS AMG GT also features a new AMG Ride Control Performance suspension system, providing an even sportier, firmer ride that improves its handling and its ability to put power to the ground. As the old SLS AMG was as much a performance vehicle as it was a comfortable grand tourer, we wonder if the more hardcore set up has compromised its riding qualities on the road.
Matching its aesthetics with its performance, the SLS AMG GT will feature darker, more sinister headlights as well as bright red brake calipers to show off its sportiness. The GT will feature a new set of 20-inch wheels as well. Naturally, "GT" badging is prominently displayed on the new car's trunk lid.
As for the interior, a glossy black finish is applied to the the center console and door panels. Seat belts and floor mats are trimmed in red for a bit of visual pop. Finally, a custom AMG Performance steering wheel with metal inserts and Alcantara side grips lets the driver know it means business.
The 2013 SLS AMG GT will be offered in both coupe and convertible variants. Slated to arrive in showrooms by November, pricing for the new GT will be released closer to its release date.
