Robert Downey Jr. could return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Tony Stark. Rumor has it that fans may not have seen the last of Tony Stark in the franchise just yet as the character may be headed back to the MCU for an “Ironheart” TV show.
Fans of the MCU were devastated by the shocking death of Iron Man in “Avengers: Endgame.” In the film, the superhero sacrificed himself in order to save the universe.
After the film, rumors swirled around that Iron Man could return to the MCU in the form of artificial intelligence (AI). Speculations were rife that his return would happen in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” via E.D.I.T.H., but that didn’t happen.
Now it looks like Downey won’t stay away from the franchise for long. According to reports, it’s only a matter of time before “Ironheart” makes her jump to live action, and it’s where Tony Stark will make his surprising comeback. The potential return of Tony Stark to the MCU is in keeping with the comic book lore, where a facsimile of Shellhead was also created on multiple occasions.
The idea of Riri Williams’ Ironheart having Tony Stark as her AI is pulled straight from the comic book. There’s also a chapter in the source material where the world was in dire need of a new Iron person while Tony Stark was in a coma. Marvel could easily translate this arc to the MCU as everyone is still mourning the “death” of Tony Stark at this point in the franchise.
Before the rumor came out, there has already been a lot of talk of Ironheart joining the MCU. Even Downey himself previously said that he would love to see his character return to the franchise. Considering that, then having a show that features Downey in a voice-over capacity, makes a lot of sense as it could be the neatest way to bring back Tony Stark to the MCU without requiring too much of Downey’s time.
Although Marvel has yet to confirm the rumor, it’s a huge possibility considering that the studio previously confirmed that it’s planning a Disney Plus series starring Ironheart, the teenage genius who continues Tony Stark’s legacy after his death.
