The San Antonio Spurs will fly to Los Angeles to take on the Lakers on Friday night in one of the NBA season's biggest matchups yet. The injury-battered Lakers have gone 1-1 in the preseason so far, with its bench taking down their LA rival Clippers before dropping their second game against Golden State. NBA fans should keep a close eye on how they perform tonight to see if the historical powerhouse will really be able to compete in 2013 and 2014. The Lakers are down Kobe Bryant, of course, although some are making noise about a possible comeback during the season for the aging star. Point guard Steve Nash also hasn't logged many minutes for the Lakers, playing only here and there against the Clippers while sitting out for the Warriors entirely. The Lakers say they'll rest him in one of every back-to-back game they play. Jodie Meeks, who started in Nash's place against Golden State, had 14 points against them, but their team trailed at points by as much as 35 points, and shot only 39 percent from the field.
Now the Lakers will face a San Antonio defense which has a reputation for smothering opponents. Meeks told Sports Illustrated that he thought his time was up to it. "They are a great team," Meeks said. "They have a great coach and a great organization. We just have to eliminate our mistakes because if you don't, they can really make you pay. It's going to be a tough game for us but we look forward to the challenge."
Gregg Popovich, the Spurs' coach, sounded pretty happy with his team after they knocked off the Memphis Grizzlies 101-94 on Wednesday. Especially with Boris Diaw, who stepped in in the third quarter for center Tim Duncan after Duncan got knocked out of the game with a chest contusion and added 14 points, going 6 for 9 from the floor. "He went and talked to a guru in India or something," Popovich told SI. "I don't know what he did, but he catches and shoots now. I got nothing to do with it. I've been begging him since he got here. His previous coaches have begged him. All of a sudden he's a catch-and-shoot guy. It's continued and we're happy about it." Check out the action when it goes live tonight at 10:30pm EST here.
