When the Smart ForTwo was first introduced, many skeptics believed the city car was nothing more than a glorified golf kart. Now that the company has unveiled its latest new Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, they couldn't be more right!
Starting at $25,750, Smart boasts that its new EV will be the least expensive electric car available in the U.S. market. For an extra $3,000, Smart will gladly offer you the least expensive electric cabriolet.
According to a statement from Smart's press release, "The (Smart Fortwo) Electric Drive will have the smallest footprint of any car on U.S. roads and its cabriolet sibling will be the only convertible electric vehicle on the market."
Fitted with a 17.6 kilowatt-hour engine with an output of 74-hp and 96 lb.-ft. of torque and a curb weight well below 2,000 lbs., the Smart promises to be quite a capable urban warrior against the evils of rush hour congestion. Range is estimated at 90 miles. So far, the EPA has yet to publish any official economy numbers.
While the standard Smart ForTwo was never a hit in North America, Smart is betting on its new EV and its attractive pricing to cause buyers to reconsider.
Making a more serious push, Smart has just revealed a new one-minute commercial to promote the car. Titled "Homecoming," the Smart ad is a brilliantly whimsical play on classic Sci-Fi flicks. Without giving too much away, check out Smart's latest ad spot below!
