Prince William experienced one of his most embarrassing moments when he was young, and it was because of Princess Diana. A royal biographer revealed that the late Princess of Wales once gave Prince William a smack on the bottom in front of his friends, causing him to burst into tears.

Princess Diana may have shared a very close relationship with Prince William and Prince Harry, but she was also very strict with them. Once, a 7-year-old Prince William ran away as Princess Diana was about to leave after their sports day at school, and Princess Diana didn’t hesitate giving him a public smacking.

“Her temper snapped when he ran away as she was about to leave after the events had ended,” royal correspondent Ashley Walton wrote in 1990. “The seven-year-old Prince set off across a field to play with his sirens from London’s Wetherby School. Diana, clearly angry, dashed 100 yards, caught him by the arm and have him a firm smack on the bottom. William burst into tears,” she recounted.

After telling him off, Princess Diana pushed Prince William back into their car and drove back to Kensington Palace. It was one of those rare moments when Princess Diana’s temper just snapped because of his misbehavior.

Although seeing parents accompany their children on their first day of school is a normal tradition for nonroyals, it is not a common practice for the members of the royal family. In fact, it was only during Princess Diana’s time that things have changed as she made sure that she was always there for her children.

When Princess Diana was still alive, she always wanted to be involved in her children’s lives. That is why even though it wasn’t normal for royals like them to accompany their children, she always made it a point to bring Prince William and Prince Harry to school.

In his book “Harry: A Biography Of A Prince,” royal author Angela Levin revealed that Princess Diana didn’t stick to royal traditions when it comes to raising her children. “Diana broke all the rules of traditional royal child-rearing,” said Levin. “Even dropping her boys off at school herself. That was unheard of in Prince Charles’ day,” she added.
