A child’s christening is one of the major events of a baby’s life. It basically signals the start of the child’s journey of faith, which also highlights the important role that the mother and father have to play in guiding the little one. However, Princess Diana’s experience during the young Prince William’s christening left much to be desired.

In fact, it made Princess Diana feel like she really had no significant role to play in the entire event. For starters, nobody seemed to ask for her input on the little yet important details, such as the time when the ceremony will be held.

“Nobody asked me when it was suitable for William — 11 o’clock, couldn’t have been worse,” Diana told royal biographer Andrew Morton in “Diana: Her True Story.” Indeed, Prince William can be seen crying in the christening photos, which perhaps corroborates Princess Di’s assessment that it was not the best time for the event.

Maybe it was the stresses of having just undergone through the birthing process that was giving Princess Diana the blues. But the fact remains that she felt shunned in that event, which should have been her and Prince William’s special day.

“Endless pictures of the Queen, Queen Mother, Charles and William. I was excluded totally that day,” Princess Diana poured her heart out to Morton. “I felt desperate, because I had literally just given birth — William was only six weeks old.”

Perhaps sensing that his mother is not feeling good, young William then started crying. “William started crying too,” Diana added. “Well, he just sensed that I wasn’t exactly hunky-dory.”

A brief video clip of William’s christening is posted on YouTube. It shows the royal family posing for the camera while the young prince can be seen crying. Thankfully, he stopped making a fuss once his mother put her fingers into his mouth.

Prince William has six godparents when he was christened. They are Prince Phillip’s cousin King Constantine II, the former King of Greece; Lord Mountbatten’s grandson, Lord Romsey; author Sir Laurens van der Post; Princess Alexandra; Lady Susan Hussey; and Diana’s close friend, the Duchess of Westminster.
