After the wedding of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, to Prince William in 2011, Kate Middleton has been subject to pressure of all sorts. After all, she is royalty. The duchess successfully adapted to the royal lifestyle and adhered to protocols. From the way she dresses and shakes hands to the way she handles royal duties and makes decisions for her family, Kate has been under constant scrutiny. It is a small price to pay for earning the title princess and for living a fairytale life.

The Duchess of Cambridge may have adapted well, but she is still human like the rest of us. Below are some of the moments when Kate shocked the world, or even herself, as a royalty.

1. Passing Up Royal Duties

The duchess had three pregnancies, but there is not a trace that she had difficulties during those times. However, during her pregnancy with Prince Louis, Kate wanted to keep a low profile and keep public appearances to a minimum due to severe morning sickness. The decision reportedly made Her Majesty furious for choosing to pass up royal duties. The princess made her final public appearance a few weeks before she gave birth to Prince Louis.

2. Choosing Lamb As Main Course

Before the world tagged Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as rule breakers, it was Prince William and Kate who were first to break the rules, or traditions to say the least. What was even worse was that the two broke a tradition on their wedding day! The royal couple apparently chose a very risqué main course — a lamb. If the lamb was missed, it would have left 300 guests disappointed and a lot of food waste.

3. Being Reoriented On Curtsy

Kate might be the queen consort, but Her Majesty reminded her of the “Order of Precedence in the Royal Household.” According to the order of precedence, a former commoner turned princess must curtsy to natural-born princesses.

This means that Kate, same with Meghan, must show curtsy to Princess Alexandra, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie when the Duke of Cambridge is not around. Meghan has to do the same with sister-in-law Kate when the latter becomes queen consort.

4. Refusing Hospital Care

During Kate’s pregnancy to Princess Charlotte, she refused to be brought to the hospital. She was highly judged for it as a royalty and mother. However, she had good reason for not wanting to go the hospital.

Apparently in 2012, two broadcasters pranked a nurse named Jacintha Saldanha. Saldanha was in charge of Kate during the duchess’ pregnancy to Prince George. The prank involved the two broadcasters pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles to fish information from the nurse. Not knowing it was a prank (and maybe out of fear to the Queen and Prince Charles), the nurse disclosed some confidential information, which was shared on air. The nurse committed suicide the following day.

5. Being Caught With Non-pedicured Toes

Another real shocker for all is the time when Prince William and Kate paid respects to Mohandas Gandhi in India. It is customary for visitors to remove their footwear to show respect. When the always polished Kate did, the public quickly saw her non-pedicured toes.

6. Lacking Charisma

There is a mixed fascination for Kate that is somewhat between love to love and love to hate. The latter was a choice for Paul Burrell, former royal butler to Princess Diana. He simply compared Kate to Prince William’s late mother and sees that the duchess lacks charisma and there is nothing special about her, except for a lovely face.

7. Going Topless

The royal watchers have seen Kate’s skirt blew up Marilyn Monroe style, but it is nothing compared to the scandal that broke in Swedish tabloids. The duchess was photographed topless during her vacation with Prince William in the private chateau of Queen Elizabeth’s nephew, Viscount David Linley, located at Provence, France.

The royal palace quickly defended Kate with the following statement: “Their Royal Highnesses had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them.”

Kate’s party sued the “Closer” magazine and newspaper editor and photographers for publishing the scandalous photos for a hefty price of $1.9 million and additional fines. Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton, ditched television interviews to promote her event planning business Celebrate after the photos went public.

8. Not Inviting Meghan

While this moment did not come directly from Kate, the duchess was asked by biological sister Pippa to skip invitation for her wedding to at that time soon-to-be sister-in-law Meghan. This might have been one of the cases where a feud rumor between the two duchesses started. However, there was a “no ring, no bring” rule in Pippa’s wedding, and Meghan was not yet married to Prince Harry.
