A massive lenticular cloud resembling an unidentified flying object (UFO) was seen over the city of Bursa in Turkey on Thursday.

It surprising citizens as well as social media users after the video of the cloud started trending.

According to The Guardian, the almost circular cloud appeared at sunrise and featured a large hole right in the middle. It remained intact for about an hour.

Fox Weather reported that descriptions like UFO, a floating target and atmospheric dart board were apt for the unusual cloud formation. Such a cloud is usually found either floating near or draped over mountain tops and ridges.

The bizarre pink cloud forms when the air is stable and winds blow across hills and mountains. The winds blow from the same or similar direction at different heights through the troposphere, reported Daily Mail. But social media users were quick to point out its resemblance to other objects, including flying saucers.

A photo of the cloud was clicked over the Gokmen Aerospace Training Center (GUHEM) in Bursa in the early hours of Thursday morning. Lenticular cloud gets its name from the Latin word, Altocumulus lenticularis. It translates to like a lens. Such clouds are known for their curved and flying saucer-like appearance. They are usually found at heights of around 6,400 to 16,500 feet.

The Met Office said that these strange, "unnatural looking clouds sometimes form downwind of hills or mountains." The office shared that they look a lot like the traditional shape of "flying saucers in science fiction." Real lenticular clouds are believed to be one of the "most common explanations for UFO sightings across the world."

According to the Met Office, lenticular clouds are a visible sign of mountain waves in the air. The office explained that when air blows across a mountain range, in certain circumstances, "it can set up a train of large standing waves in the air downstream." It looks like ripples "forming in a river when water flows over an obstruction." It further said that if there is enough moisture in the air, the "rising motion of the wave will cause water vapour to condense." This will lead to formation of the "unique appearance of lenticular clouds."

Several surprised viewers took to Twitter to discuss the strange clouds, with one saying that it's very interesting, just like in "the Alien movies."

This isn't the first time in recent weeks that people have been left stunned by clouds that come under the unusual category. Last month, people spotted noctilucent clouds, known as the world's rarest clouds, over the San Francisco Bay area.

A highly awaited US intelligence report on dozens of mysterious unidentified flying object sightings said most could not be explained, but did not rule out that some could be alien spacecraft. The report made no mention of the possibility of -or rule out - that some of the objects sighted could represent extra-terrestrial life. The military and intelligence community have conducted research on them as a potential threat. Photo by Patrick T. Fallon/AFP via Getty Images
