After seven spectacularly good White House Correspondents’ Dinner speeches, it was no surprise that President Obama’s last address was epic.
It all began with the song “When I’m Gone.” After which Obama joked, “You can’t say it, but you know it’s true… Here we are, my eight and final appearance in this unique event."
“And I am excited…if this material works well, I’m going to use it at Goldman Sachs next year,” he continued.
As expected, the President masterfully touched on different relevant subjects such as the elections, world leaders and just “how black he really is.” Here are the 6 main highlights of the funny speech:
- About Donald Trump: “You know I have to talk about Trump,” he said. “Is this dinner too tacky for the Donald? What could he possibly be doing instead? Is he at home eating a Trump steak? Tweeting out insults to Angela Merkel? What's he doing?” Obama also slammed the mogul for “inflating his income” unlike billionaire guest Michael Bloomberg “who knows policy in-depth and is actually worth the amount of money he says he is.”
- About his recent meeting with Prince George: “Foreign leaders they have been looking ahead, anticipating my departure,” he joked. “Last week, Prince George showed up to our meeting in his bathrobe. That was a slap in the face. A clear breach of protocol.”
- About his last meeting with Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: “In fact somebody recently said to me, ‘Mr President, you are so yesterday. Justin Trudeau has completely replaced you. He's so handsome; he's so charming; he's the future.’ And I said: 'Justin, just give it a rest.’”
- About Ted Cruz: The Republican presidential candidate has criticized the President for not being born in the U.S., but Obama gets it. “Ted had a tough week. He went to Indiana, stood on a basketball court and called the hoop a basketball ring. What else is in his lexicon? Baseball sticks, football hats, but, sure I'm the foreign one!”
- About his most likely successor: “Next year at this time, someone else will be standing here in this very spot but its anyone’s guess who she will be,” was how the President gave his former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, a shout out.
- About the Republican Party: “The Republican establishment is incredulous that he's their most likely nominee,” Obama said about Trump. Further on he also joked about the current in-house fighting going on within the Party. “Eight years ago I said it was time to change the tone of our politics. In hindsight, I clearly should have been more specific.”
- About “Game of Thrones”: The President, who got to see the series’ sixth season in advance, made allusion to one of the show’s most shocking episodes ever. He began by naming some of the Republicans in attendance and then jokingly called security to bar the doors. “It’s going to be like the Red Wedding,” he joked.
In the end, POTUS said his two final words “Obama out!” before dropping the mic, earning a standing ovation with claps and cheers. Watch the full speech below:
