Hours after the Washington Navy Yard shooting just a few blocks over from the White House, a man was arrested on the North Lawn, Secret Service told reporters. At about 6:30 p.m. Monday, a man allegedly tossed a firecracker over the fence. With an already pressing situation occuring so close by, which left 13 people dead, Secret Service agents feared more gunfire. Alexander Sahagian was quickly taken into handcuffs, but has yet to be charged. He will likely be faced with throwing a projectile, White House spokesman George Ogilvie said. Agents sealed off the area and sent journalists covering the nearby shooting into the West Wing for safety.

Sahagian, 52, was arrested previously in Milwaukee in August. The charges against him for the previous incident remain unclear. Police shut down two blocks 17th Street NW and a block of Pennsylvania Avenue. Pedestrians and tourists were still allowed to walk down the street as many gathered to watch the incident unfold. "There have not been shots outside the White House," Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said after the incident was preliminarily investigated. The gunman involved in the shooting of the navy yard died after being taken down by police following the rampage. Investigators say another potential shooter is currently in custody.
