Angelina Jolie has yet to finalize her divorce from Brad Pitt, but the former husband and wife are now officially single. On Friday, the judge handling their bifurcation ruled that the two Hollywood stars are now legally unmarried, and as it turned out, both Jolie and Pitt requested it to happen.

Jolie and Pitt have been living apart since 2016. Although their divorce process is still ongoing, the ex-couple decided to negotiate a bifurcated judgment to get rid of their married status. In law, “bifurcation” is the legal term for gaining single status before the finalization of a divorce.

According to a source, Jolie and Pitt did not want to wait for their divorce to be finalized to be classed as legally single again. The decision to negotiate a bifurcation judgment was reportedly to allow them to continue to discuss the terms of their divorce while not dragging out their married status any longer. Apparently, both of them wanted to be totally out of each other’s lives.

“Both parents are focused on what’s best for the kids,” a source close to the couple said. The ex-couple also requested to gain single status so they could emotionally move on from each other amid the complexities of the ongoing divorce proceedings. “Both want to get on with their lives and no longer want to be married to each other,” the source added.

The source also clarified that no third party is involved in their decision to be legally single again. “The rush for a separation is not because either person is in a significant relationship, but that they need to emotionally move on,” the source explained.

It has been three years since Jolie and Pitt filed for a divorce, but the divorce process is still ongoing. According to reports, what is particularly slowing down the process is the complexity of splitting their finances. They also have custody details to figure out.

After being together for more than a decade, Jolie and Pitt announced their separation in 2016. Since their split, Jolie and Pitt have endured drawn-out legal procedures involving their assets and the custody of their six children.
