Earlier this year, Porsche confirmed that the company will introduce a new factory-backed LMP1 racing car to compete in the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans. Development is proceeding at full speed.

In fact, in order to better compete against the new titan Audi Sport and the rising talent in Toyota's program, Porsche has arranged to expand its Weissach, Germany, research center, headed by Fritz Enzinger. The new complex will feature both a new workshop as well as a new office complex.

Rollout of the latest Porsche LMP1 is planned for mid-2013 and the engineers are not only competing with the latest leaders in the sport, but they are running away from their own shadow as well.

The history behind Porsche at Le Mans is the stuff of legends. Never before have 3-digit numbers like "917," "956," and "962" stood for so much glory.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a return. Porsche never left.

Earlier this month, Porsche recently unveiled its latest 911 RSR racing car slated to compete in the GT3 class, a class that Porsche has consistently dominated since the 911 first debuted.

Despite the illustrious track record, how dare a car blog boldly place Porsche above the rest? Before the iconic Porsche 917, it was the Ford GT40 that toppled the Scuderia Ferrari empire with 4 consecutive victories spanning from 1966-1969. What's more, the Mazda 787B defeated the Porsche 962C to remain the only car with a Wankel rotary engine to win Le Mans outright.

Despite the well-deserved achievements of other notable manufacturers, watch the video below to understand why Porsche will always remain synonymous with the 24 Hours of Le Mans:
