It is no secret that the majority of British citizens do not want Prince Charles as their future king. Although people around the world are so fond of the royal family, most of them do not find Queen Elizabeth’s son particularly likable. Here are the reasons why Prince Charles is an unpopular choice as Great Britain’s future king.

1. Many think he is too old to become king

There is no age limit to becoming king or queen. If Queen Elizabeth lives up to more than a hundred years, then Prince Charles will accede to the throne when he is about 80. Bizarre as it may sound, that is what a hereditary monarchy is all about.

Unfortunately, the Brits want someone younger and fresher as their future king. In fact, they look forward to Prince Charles abdicating and handing over the crown directly to his firstborn. The Brits believe that having someone as young as Prince William as king will help add some zest to the centuries-old institution that is the British monarchy.

2. Some think he might be a “meddling king”

Over the years that he has been the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles has made headlines several times for meddling with politics and publicly campaigning for political causes. This is totally against the monarchy’s rule. In a previous interview, however, Prince Charles laughed out the issue when asked if he would be a “meddling king.” “I always wonder what meddling is,” he said. “I mean, I always thought it was motivating, but I’ve always been intrigued: If it’s meddling to worry about the inner-cities as I did 40 years ago and what was happening or not happening there, the conditions in which people were living … If that’s meddling I’m very proud of it,” he added.

3. The Brits have not totally moved on yet from his failed marriage with Princess Diana

The biggest factor that made the tide of public opinion turn against Prince Charles is his failed marriage with Princess Diana. Although it has been more than two decades since Princess Diana died, Prince Charles and his ex-mistress, now Duchess Camilla, remain unloved by the Brits at large.

The reason why the people have long hated Prince Charles is that they loved Princess Diana too much. When reports about Prince Charles’ secret affair with Camilla Parker Bowles emerged, the Brits sympathized with Princess Diana and started to loathe the Prince of Wales. Although Prince Charles’ reputation has improved a bit since then, for most Brits, 27 years is not enough to heal the wounds of the past.
