A woman reportedly killed herself after learning that her husband purchased a phone for her under an equated monthly installment (EMI) scheme. The incident occurred in the MPV 14 village of Kalimela tehsil in the Malkangiri district of Odisha, India.

The deceased woman, identified as Jyoti Mandal reportedly got married to her husband Kanhei last year. Kanhei recently decided to surprise his wife and bought a smartphone to gift his wife. However, since the price of the phone was very high, Kanhei, who could not afford to pay for it at once, opted for an EMI option, India Today reported.

However, Jyoti was unaware that the phone was bought on EMI. After the husband made the first installment payment for the phone, officials from the finance company visited the couple’s place for a signature.

Jyoti, however, reportedly became enraged as Kanhei had not told her about the fact that the phone she had been using was bought on EMI. Following this, a heated argument ensued between the couple. As the argument escalated, Jyoti, in a fit of rage, consumed poison in front of her husband to commit suicide. Seeing Jyoti consume the poison, Kanhei purportedly collapsed to the ground in shock, Odisha Bytes News reported.

Jyoti and Kanhei were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment. However, Jyoti succumbed to her health complications and was declared dead. Meanwhile, Kanhei is still under treatment and is yet to recover from the shock.

Even though no complaint was registered in connection with the incident, police have launched an investigation into the incident.

In a similar but unrelated incident, an 18-year-old girl reportedly killed herself after her parents failed to buy her an iPhone in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India on Friday, Sept. 30, as previously reported.

The deceased girl, a first-year degree student at Raisoni College in Hingna town, Nagpur, had repeatedly asked her parents to buy her an iPhone for the past several months. After her persistent demands to buy her the phone, her parents finally accepted her demand and promised to buy her a new iPhone.

However, due to the delay in purchasing the iPhone, the girl presumed that her parents were not going to buy her the phone. Upset and depressed over this, the girl decided to end her life and allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in the bedroom of her house in the Kharbi area of Nagpur city on Friday, Sept. 30 evening.

Following her suicide, police officers responded to the scene, recorded the statement of the deceased girl's father, and registered a case of accidental death in connection with the incident.
