Despite the fact that the 2014 World Cup is less than two months away, Mexican national star Giovani dos Santos is not sure if he’ll join his native Mexico when the summer games begin in Brazil. El Tri boss Miguel Herrera has a pretty good idea of what his team will look like come the June 12 start date and while many of the top Mexican stars are expected to be on the team, dos Santos is not a lock to grace the pitch for a Mexico squad hoping to make a strong run through a deep tournament field.

While the 24-year-old attacking midfielder continues to pursue a place in Brazil, Miguel Herrera is expected to enter with a 23-man roster that, as of now, will most likely include the following talents: Jesus Corona, Alfredo Talavera, Diego Reyes, Rafael Marquez, Hector Moreno, Francisco Rodriguez, Miguel Layun, Paul Aguilar, Andres Guardado, Juan Carlos Medina, Carlos Pena, Jose Juan Vazquez, Luis Montes, Hector Herrera, Isaac Brizuela, Oribe Peralta, Javier Hernandez, Raul Jimenez and Alan Pulido. Releasing a supposed list of players they considered to be ‘locks’ for the 2014 World Cup, FOX Deportes believes the aforementioned players will make an appearance for El Tri, leaving individuals including dos Santos, Marco Fabian and Miguel Ponce fighting for the remaining slots.

“He's obviously a very important player for us,” Herrera said of dos Santos after the former Barcelona star suffered a recent calf injury. “Unfortunately there are injuries in our sport. The only thing we can ask of him is to be calm. We will continue to observe him. We are going to make sure that he has enough time to recuperate, and we will see if there's an update within the month. He's a great player. But when you arrive at the World Cup, you have to keep looking up with the idea of changing everything and winning a World Cup. It’s very difficult, but if you don't go with that dream, then why are you going. That is how we will enter Brazil.”

Currently a member of La Liga squad Villareal, Giovani dos Santos -- who has recorded 10 goals and 7 assists in 26 appearances this season -- continues to rebuild himself from injury and even though he’s yet to appear for El Tri under the guidance of Miguel Herrera, the fact that El Piojo speaks highly of his ability and because the Mexico roster is not yet finalized, the Mexican talent certainly has a chance to earn his place at the World Cup.
