“Pretty Little Liars” Season 5 premiere is still months away, however the questions from the Season 4 finale, “A is for Answers” have been driving fans of the mysterious series mad. The main question that is set to be answered in the forthcoming coming new season is why did Melissa Hastings return to Rosewood? Fans were treated to the return of multiple minor character cameos in the Season 4 finale, however Melissa’s return seems the most intriguing mainly due to her whispered confession in the Rosewood police station. So while we don't yet know why Melissa came back from London, we do know that her use of Spencer as an excuse was suspicious to say the least. So while we won’t know for sure until the Season 5 premiere “EscApe from New York,” we have a few theories to explain Melissa’s return.

Many fans speculated that Spencer did kill someone the night of Alison’s disappearance -- it just wasn’t her friend. After the Hastings hired a private investigator to research Spencer and the events of that night, the theory that she was involved in a murder was even furthered. But after Ali revealed the events of the night now infamous night in “A is for Answers” Spencer conscious was finally cleared because Ali confirmed that Spencer was not responsible for killing the girl in Ali’s grave. But someone was and Melissa knows who, when the Hastings were being questioned by Rosewood PD it seemed like Melissa whispered the identity of the killer in her father’s ear. Was she confessing to the crime or finally just coming clean about a secret she has known for years? Melissa has always seemed too suspicious to not be involved in the events of Ali’s disappearance, she always connected to the N.A.T club which leads us to believe she knows more than she is telling!

Melissa’s return may be less about confessions and more about confrontations. Melissa returned to Rosewood and so did CeCe Drake, which is leaving fans to wonder if the elder Hasting returned in time to confront her former fri-enemy. CeCe was apprehended by the Rosewood PD in connection with the murder of Detective Wilden, and it seems like she isn’t to worried about being convicted of homicide. She reveals to Detective Holbrook that's he knows who actually killed Maya St. Germain, so maybe she knows who really killed Wilden. Maybe the killer was none other than Melissa, who claims she is always trying to protect Spencer, and she has returned to ensure that CeCe Drake isn’t talking to the police abut her involvement.

Finally, Melissa’s return could have more sinister intentions. Maybe Melissa returned to kill Mrs. DiLaurentis. The timing of Melissa’s return and Mrs. D’s death seems all too coincidental, no while a lot of other character returned for the Season 4 finale, she was one of the few who had the time and resources to kill and bury Mrs. DiLaurentis. Noel Kahn was with Alison and the Liars in New York, and CeCe Drake was in police custody, leaving Melissa and “A” in the clear to take down Alison’s mom. Now while the reasoning behind her hatred of Mrs. D is still unclear, one thing is for sure the Hastings and the DiLaurentis’ have a complicated history.
