A 12-year-old girl reportedly killed herself after an altercation ensued between her and her younger brother over rice in Surat, Gujarat, India on Friday, Sept. 23.
The girl, identified as 12-year-old Jyoti Soni, a seventh-grade student, reportedly offered rice to her 8-year-old younger brother during lunchtime after the boy asked for food as he was feeling hungry. However, her brother expressed disinterest in the offer and refused to eat it, the Times Of India reported.
Jyoti reportedly felt enraged over this and a heated altercation ensued with her younger brother over the food. However, after the fight with her younger brother, the girl reportedly began to feel very remorseful about the confrontation. Following this, in a state of guilt, she allegedly decided to take her own life. She allegedly hung a noose from a hook on the ceiling of their home and killed herself on Friday, Sept. 23.
When the incident happened, the parents had gone out and the siblings were alone at their residence on Ashwini Kumar Road in Surat, Gujarat, Times Now reported.
An officer of the Varachha Police Station confirmed that they have retrieved the girl's body to conduct an autopsy. He added that a preliminary investigation revealed that the girl's death was an apparent suicide and that no foul play is suspected at the moment.
However, the police are carrying out a probe to find out if there was any other reason or circumstances that led to the girl’s alleged suicide.
The deceased girl's family reportedly hails from Nepal. Jyoti's father works as a driver while her mother works in a textile unit.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 16-year-old girl allegedly took her own life after her mother did not cook her favorite dish for dinner in Raipur, Dehradun, India on Thursday, Sept. 15, Latin Times reported.
The unnamed girl, 16, was reportedly unhappy over the dish that was prepared by her mother and refused to eat dinner on Thursday, Sept. 15. After a heated argument with her mother over the food, the girl trudged to her room and locked the door from inside.
However, when there was no response from the girl even after hours had passed, her family members knocked on her room and asked her to open the door. Since there was no response from the girl, the family members broke open the door and found the girl hanging lifeless from the ceiling.
Following the gruesome discovery, the teen girl was immediately rushed to a hospital for immediate treatment. However, the doctors at the facility declared her dead upon arrival.
