Volkswagen continues to remind us why it is one of the industry leaders in diesel technology.

The German automaker has announced that its latest VW Golf Bluemotion Concept is capable of averaging 88.3 mpg while emitting only 85g/km of CO2. Powered by a 1.6 liter diesel producing 108-hp and 184 lb.-ft of torque, the figure translates to a 15 percent boost in efficiency compared to the outgoing model. Although the production model will not go on sale until next summer, reputable industry insiders have already confirmed that these fuel efficiency claims will hold true once the Golf Bluemotion officially enters into production.

During an interview, Volkswagen product chief Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg said, "This is the most efficient Golf of all time. The Golf is the most important car in the VW group and it was a challenge not to make it only a great car, but the best car in its class."

Volkswagen XL1

Beyond the Golf Bluemotion, Volkswagen also aims to schedule the XL1 concept to enter production by 2013 as well.

A peculiar looking off-tandem gullwing vehicle, the Volkswagen XL1's design focuses on efficiency in both its powertrain and aerodynamics. Powered by an innovative diesel hybrid drivetrain, Volkswagen claims that the XL1 is capable of returning more than 300 mpg! According to Dr. Hackenberg, production will be extremely limited and will be targeted towards high-tech embracing early adopters.

Prices for either vehicle have yet to be revealed. Stay tuned as we learn more from Volkswagen.
