An elderly woman murdered her 78-year-old husband after he became suspicious of her having an affair.

The incident happened, Monday, March 29, in the city of Surat in Gujarat, India.

The police on Tuesday arrested 71-year-old Lekshmi for the murder of her husband, Amritlal Patel.

According to the police, Lekshmi went to a temple on Monday and since the time she returned, her husband began accusing her of lying. The man repeatedly said that the woman had gone to meet some other man.

The abuse continued throughout the day, police said. At one point, Patel grabbed a glass bottle and tried hitting his wife. The woman, however, dodged and managed to save herself.

All hell broke loose during dinner when Patel began confronting and abusing his wife again. The woman immediately retaliated. She grabbed a wooden washing paddle and began hitting her husband.

The man collapsed on the ground after being struck in the abdomen. He suffered multiple injuries and was later pronounced dead.

"The old man constantly doubted that his wife had an affair with someone. The family members had tried convincing several times in the past, but in vain," a police officer said, the Times of India reported.

The victim’s nephew, Kamlesh, informed the police about the incident and filed a complaint against Lekshmi.

"My uncle used to doubt my aunt and often fought with her. Often fought with her. On Monday, during the fight, she hit him on the head and he suffered injuries in the abdominal area and died," Kamlesh told police.
