“The Americans” returns tonight to FX for the Season 2 premiere “Comrades.” And if you were expecting a lull in the espionage drama, then you are going to be disappointed because Season 2 is kicking off with a gut-wrenching mission that goes wrong. Following a botched coop that almost cost Elizabeth her life, tensions are high when again Elizabeth is given bad intel, although this time the dedicated KGB spy is not the only one at risk. According to the episode 1 synopsis from FX, “Elizabeth comes back from her injury and straight into what should have been a routine mission.” And like the last assignment the audience witnessed, this one also goes awry. Due to another failed mission an increasing pressure from the FBI and now also their own KGB, Philip and Elizabeth are fearful for “themselves but for their whole network … and family.” Speaking of family, the espionage arranged couple actually begin to function as a real life couple in love in Season 2.
Elizabeth and Philip’s relationship has most likely progressed due to Elizabeth’s failed mission in the Season 1 finale, where she was shot and wounded. She did make it out of the set up and her physical wounds have healed, although the bullet cut deeper into the emotional bond between Elizabeth and her fake husband. Their marriage, children and subsequent life together is allegedly only a part of their cover as KGB agents, but in Season 2 this rouse of a relationship begins to crumble, and their true passions for each other and their family comes to the surface. The main question to consider for Season 2 of “The Americans” will be if Elizabeth in particular will put Philip and her children above mother Russia and the KGB, which she holds so dear.
So like I said the drama only escalates in the Season 2 premiere of “The Americans” which debuts tonight at 10 p.m. on FX. If you can’t watch on TV, that doesn't’t mean you have to miss out on the Cold War antics, you can tune in to Season 2 episode 1, “Comrades” online available via live stream at vod.fxnetworks.com.
