“The Americans” returns to FX on Feb. 26 for its Season 2 premiere, and with the return of Philip and Elizabeth comes a whole lot of sexual tension. In addition to the increasingly sexual promo videos, Elizabeth and Philip’s relationship has most likely progressed due to Elizabeth’s failed mission in the Season 1 finale, where she was shot and wounded. She did make it out of the set up and her physical wounds have healed, although the bullet cut deeper into the emotional bond between Elizabeth and her fake husband. While technically married, Elizabeth and Philip did participate in the typical courtship, instead the couple was paired by the KGB and set to American on a direct mission to act as spies. Their marriage, children and subsequent life together is allegedly only a part of their cover, but in Season 2 this rouse of a relationship begins to crumble, and their true passions for each other and their family comes to the surface. The main question to consider for Season 2 of “The Americans” will be if Elizabeth in particular will put Philip and her children above mother Russia and the KGB, which she holds so dear.
"They're ready to be married," “The Americans” executive producer Joel Fields told TV Guide recently. "What they're going to discover is having been fake-married for a long time, real marriage is not an easy thing. When you have two kids, there's family to contend with. Add to that their work is life-and-death and the future of mankind hangs in the balance, there's a little bit of pressure for them." Now that Elizabeth has recovered from her injuries, Philip and her are once again battling for their lives and the lives other fellow spies in the KGB network in the US. According to the Season 2 premiere “Comrades” synopsis, “Elizabeth comes back from her injury and straight into what should have been a routine mission.” And like the last coop the audience witnessed, this one also goes awry. Due to another failed mission an increasing pressure from the FBI and now also their own KGB, Philip and Elizabeth are fearful for “themselves but for their whole network … and family.” Speaking of family, while the formally fake couple, may actually begin to function as a real life couple in love soon, that doesn’t’ mean the rest of the family isn’t privy to their double lives. Due to her “mother’s absence” following the gunshot wound, “Paige's suspicions have only grown.” Paige isn’t the only growing increasingly more suspicion of her parents, Stan who conveniently moved next door to the family has sensed something was wrong from the moment he encountered them. He kept Elizabeth and Philip on his radar for all of Season 1 and his feelings towards them don’t seem to change in Season 2, although he does develop more genuine feelings for the Russian agent who has him wrapped tightly around her loyal KGB finger.
