Andrea Antonelli of Team Goeleven Kawasaki died in a terrible crash Moscow Raceway on Sunday. The World Supersport rider of Italy was 25 years old.

Andrea Antonelli started fourth on the grid. However, Sunday race conditions were extremely wet as rain continued to fall over the Russian circuit. Unfortunately, the damp surface caused Andrea Antonelli to lose control of his bike, causing him to fall coming out of Turn 14 on the first lap.

The fall itself did not kill Antonelli. However, Lorenzo Zanetti could not see where Andrea Antonelli had fallen and collided right into the fallen rider. Tthe spray from the high powered motorcycles compromised the visibility on the track. According to reports, Lorenzo Zanetti's Honda struck Andrea Antonelli's head.

Due to the extreme head injury, first responders did not wait for an airlift helicopter and immediately transported Andrea Antonelli to the on-site medical center instead. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to resuscitate Andrea Antonelli.

The Supersport race was red flagged and postponed for an afternoon restart. However, the race was eventually cancelled when reports revealed Andrea Antonelli died from the crash..

"During today’s FIM World Supersport race, at 1.32pm Italian rider Andrea Antonelli (Team Goeleven Kawasaki) suffered a serious accident on the straight between Turn 14 and Turn 15 wherein he sustained critical injuries," read a statement from worldsbk.com.

"The race was stopped with the red flag and the rider was immediately taken to an ambulance where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him.

"Despite their efforts, Andrea sadly succumbed to his injuries at 2.10pm local time.

"FIM, Dorna and YMS Promotion decided to cancel all activities scheduled for the rest of the day.

"Everyone involved in motorcycle championships extends its deepest condolences to Andrea’s family, friends, team and the Italian Federation at this tragic loss."

Dr. Massimo Corbascio said there was “absolutely nothing” the emergency clinic’s team could do to revive him.
