The extent of Ben Roethlisberger’s injury sustained against the Miami Dolphins was originally thought to be small. Unfortunately, that’s not the case as the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is going to miss a lot more time than originally expected.
According to ESPN, Roethlisberger “could miss four to six weeks after having surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee.”
That’s terrible news for a Steelers team that has to face the New England Patriots next week. The Steelers are still 4-2, but without a proven reliable veteran quarterback, things could get ugly. The AFC North is always a competitive division, and Roethlisberger has missed a lot of games due to injuries over the years. Just last year Roethlisberger missed four games because of a knee injury.
"Doc says my knee looked good, but there still was some stuff in there from when I had my bone bruise last season in St. Louis. He said that might keep me out a little longer than just a simple meniscus tear. Maybe an extra week or so. But there's no way to put an exact timetable on it. It all depends on my pain and how I feel," Roethlisberger said.
The Steelers defense will be counted on now more than ever considering Roethlisberger won’t be leading the offense. Unfortunately for the Steelers, their defense ranks 28th overall and 30th against the pass.
We all know Roethlisberger is one of the toughest quarterbacks in the league, so he should bounce back like we usually see. The bigger questions remaining are how long will his recovery take and how will the Steelers do in his absence? The Baltimore Ravens are only one game back of the Steelers in the division, and they get to play the 1-5 New York Jets next followed by the Steelers. Thankfully for the Steelers, there is a bye week coming up for them in Week 8.
"When he is healthy, he'll be back with us," Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin.
