Authorities have confirmed that their operation took a tragic turn after the twin of the suspect they were pursuing reportedly “brandished a firearm at responding law enforcement,” prompting local cops to return fire, which eventually killed Deaughn Willis on Saturday.

Louisiana State Police said that Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) secured a warrant to arrest Keaughn, 25, of Baton Rouge, for charges of third-degree rape, sexual battery, simple kidnapping, and domestic abuse battery of a pregnant victim, the Daily Beast reported.

His alleged offenses came to light when the relatives of his partner approached the police for assistance.

According to the arrest report, Keaughn got into a row with his girlfriend earlier on Saturday morning, during which the suspect “grabbed her with both his hands and forcefully pulled her inside of his vehicle.”

During the trip, the suspect allegedly pulled her hair, confiscated her cellphone, and spat demeaning language against her before trying to rape her. Moments later, Keaughn would park at the Alexandria area, where the woman managed to break a car window and fled to safety, The Advocate noted.

BRPD would request assistance from East Baton Rouge deputy sheriffs as the address of concern is outside city limits. The integrated team was then deployed at the Springbrook apartment complex on George O’Neal Road, arriving shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Officers reportedly knocked on the door and identified themselves but Deaughn, who answered the door, immediately pointed a gun at responding law enforcement in search of his twin, according to Trooper First Class Taylor Scrantz.

In response, a deputy opened fire and shot Deaughn, who was pronounced dead on the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office after sustaining fatal injuries, WAFB noted.

Meanwhile, hours after the fatal shooting on George O’Neal Road, police arrested and booked Keaughn into the East Baton Rouge Parish jail at roughly 3:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Investigations are continuing as detectives continue to scrutinize all evidence and aspects of the shooting incident. Once wrapped up, the findings of the probe will be delivered to the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney’s Office.
