Some fans have been hoping that when "The Rise Of Skywalker" release date arrives later this month, it will also reveal that two of the story’s characters, John Boyega's Finn and Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron, will finally become a couple. However, that scenario isn’t happening in the film according to director J.J. Abrams.

Actor Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron in “The Rise of Skywalker,” even expressed regret that the relationship between Finn and Poe did not evolve into a romantic one. “Personally, I kind of hoped and wished that maybe that would’ve been taken further in the other films, but I don’t have control,” Isaac told Variety.

The actor also said that Finn and Poe becoming boyfriends would have been fun for him. “It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of… I don’t know what,” Isaac added. “But if they would’ve been boyfriends, that would have been fun.”

Actor John Boyega, who plays the character Finn in the film, explained that while Joe and Finn love each other, it’s just platonic. “They’ve always had a quite loving and open relationship in which it wouldn’t be too weird if it went beyond it,” Boyega said. “But at the same time, they are just platonic at the moment.”

Even director J.J. Abrams admitted that Joe and Finn share a bond unlike any other. In fact, their relationship is probably deeper than that between romantic partners.

“That relationship to me is a far deeper one than a romantic one,” Abrams said. “It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave.”

While the director ended speculations about Joe and Finn as romantic partners, he also hinted that there will be other LGBTQ representation in the movie, according to Daily Mail. “And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” Abrams said.

However, the director did not reveal further details about what this LGBTQ representation might mean. “I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie,” Abrams said. “But I did just say what I just said.”
