Elon Musk to Reduce Political Donations Amid Backlash

Elon Musk has openly discussed using recreational drugs on a regular basis, but a new report by the New York Times claims it has been much more intense than previously known.

The outlet noted that Musk has told people he used so much ketamine that it was starting to affect his bladder, an effect of chronic use. Other drugs consumed by the billionaire include ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms, as well as a daily medication box holding some 20 pills, including Adderall.

The report doesn't specify whether Musk was taking the drugs while holding a prominent role in Donald Trump's White House, but noted erratic behavior including high-profile fights with cabinet members.

Moreover, an April report by Rolling Stone discussed concerns from government officials about the possibility that Musk was on drugs during public appearances. It highlighted a speech at the 2025 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February, in which he waved around a chainsaw to show he would slash bureaucratic spending.

"I'm living the meme. You know, it's like, there's living the dream, and there's living the meme, and that's pretty much what's happening," he said during a passage of the event. The piece also claimed that officials earnestly asked each other if Musk was on drugs during meetings.

Musk has said he was prescribed ketamine to deal with depression and he took it every two weeks after feeling "great highs, terrible lows and unrelenting stress." He also told his biographer that he doesn't "like doing illegal drugs."

"If you've used too much ketamine, you can't really get work done, and I have a lot of work," he told journalist Don Lemon in 2024.

While Musk would have to undergo random drug tests given the fact that his aerospace firm SpaceX is a government contractor, the outlet noted that he had advance warning of the tests. The piece affirms that Musk used ketamine much more often, sometimes daily, and he also mixed it with other drugs.

Another passage of the piece claims that Musk also plays video games for hours on end, struggles with binge eating and takes weight-loss medication.

Musk is stepping back from his role in the Trump administration after a tumultuous stint and said he'll spend "a lot less" money supporting candidates. Instead, he intends to be fully present in his companies' operations.
