A man has been reported dead after he went outside his home to drain his pool during Hurricane Ian in Deltona, Florida on Thursday, Sept. 29.

Deputies responded to a home on Poinciana Lane near Lake Bethel at around 1 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, after the 72-year-old victim’s wife reported that her husband disappeared after heading outside during the hurricane. When the officers searched around the house for him, the deputies found his flashlight and then spotted the 72-year-old victim lying unresponsive in a canal behind the home, FOX 35 Orlando reported.

Investigators believe that the victim was using a hose to drain his pool down a hill and into a 30-foot-wide canal. However, due to the heavy rain, the steep decline into the water had become extremely soft and slippery resulting in the accident.

Several deputies then pulled the victim from the water. After pulling the victim from the canal, the officers performed CPR on the victim until paramedics arrived. However, despite their efforts, the victim could not be revived and the man was pronounced dead, WFLA News reported.
