Seven have been arrested surrounding the death "La Voz México 3" contestant Gibran David Martiz Diaz, who was reported missing since Jan. 7 after police officers reportedly raided his residence and took him into custody. Gibran Martiz, 22, was taken by authorities -- who said they knew nothing regarding his disappearance -- along with José Luis Martínez Hernández. After their disappearance, Martiz's brother, Erick Martiz, took to Facebook to spread the word about his brother's disappearance. “This is the patrol unit and its number (20-1178) in which my brother Gibran Martiz was taken away, and we still know nothing,” wrote Erick Martiz on Facebook.
It was reported this week that Gibran Martiz was found dead by authorities Saturday night, after police responded to reports of a shooting on the Huatusco-Conejos highway in Veracruz. Two vehicles were spotted on scene when authorities showed up and resisted inspection. After a shoot-out with the police, authorities gained control of the situation and were able to identify Martiz's body. In a press conference, Veracruz prosecutor Amadeo Flores Espinoza revealed that seven public safety officials have been arrested in Martiz's death and have been charged with abuse of power, breach of statutory duty, and coercion.
Tragically, Martiz's family learned of his demise after authorities told the press, according to his father, Efraín Martiz. "I will not be running away, I am the type of person that in a war like these we need to put family, cousins, brothers, children, so things can get better and to have a better country," said Efraín Martiz, who added that his son's death would serve a purpose to highlight the violence in Mexico. "If I had to put my child, oh well, but from here on out his death will have paid off." The victim's father added: "If they investigate thoroughly that this is a case of corruption, a sensible case for authorities, this will help to better and clean house from corrupt people, to the benefit of everyone."
Gibran Martiz's death comes shortly after he was on the Mexican adaptation of NBC's reality show, "The Voice." Martiz was mentored by Wisin y Yandel, who took to Twitter to share their condolesces. "We will miss you brother. May God have you in his glory," tweeted the musical duo. Yandel posted a few words on his personal account saying, "What devastating news ... May you rest in peace Gibran Martiz."
